Chitin-Artist Oloth
Light moves across Oloth’s layered crest in blue, violet, and green. They developed the colors through years of patient cultivation, adjusting the texture of each plate until the surface changed with the viewer’s position. The same care shaped Iridescent Bough, a living vessel made to be encountered as well as used.
The hive’s aestheticists rejected it. They could not deny the workmanship, but its beauty had not passed through the approved forms, and approval was the part of the process they believed mattered most. The court ordered the ship rendered back to seed. Oloth refused, and the court, unwilling to discard a useful artist, dismissed them from their commission and sent them to war in it instead.
The posting was meant as a punishment. Oloth treats every engagement as an exhibition: more eyes see the Bough’s colors in one battle than see the court’s approved forms in a year. They are proud and sometimes vain, but an honest criticism interests them far more than a compliment offered out of fear.
