Growth-Engineer Pesh

Pesh has a round, tooth-lined mouth and an engineer’s habit of inspecting every unexpected result before calling it a failure. During one project, tissue intended to breathe developed a formidable set of teeth. The charts said to discard it. Pesh examined the living result and found it could serve a purpose the charts had never considered.

That decision cost them their position in a respected growth chamber, but not the creature. It grew into Mistake Returning, and Pesh went with it. Aboard, experiments are given time to reveal their uses before anyone decides their fate. The ship has become a refuge for discarded designs and the engineers attached to them.

Pesh is neither careless nor endlessly forgiving. A creature that suffers because of an experiment deserves attention, and an engineer who conceals that suffering will find no welcome. Pesh’s quarrel is with the assumption that an unexpected form must be worthless simply because it was not ordered.
