Matron Zix of the Hivemother
Small bodies cling to Zix’s fur and gather around the many black eyes of their matron. They are not ornaments. Each carries a fragment of her attention, and each returns with news from places a single body could never reach.
Zix grew Hivemother around the same principle. Its chambers, attendants, and wandering offspring share a living inheritance, so the destruction of its great carrier is a beginning of grief rather than a clean ending. Survivors have watched scattered drones continue their mother’s work after the central body fell silent.
The Collective follows Zix because she can hold an enormous brood together without pretending its members are interchangeable. She remembers the lost, protects the useful, and expects both to serve the whole. To an enemy, that patience feels merciless: a victory over one part of her may leave the rest still close enough to answer.
