Marjanovic entered her first boardroom with evidence that the company’s directors had been paying themselves to conceal a failing yard. She persuaded the shareholders to remove them, reopened the yard under her own authority, and acquired a lasting reputation for making comfortable people nervous.

Aboard Quarterly Returns, she approaches opposition with the same discipline. She studies who supplies a rival, who depends on them, and which promises are keeping their allies loyal. When those promises prove fragile, she applies pressure until the arrangement breaks apart.

Her black hair frames a face that rarely offers reassurance. Marjanovic sees little reason to soothe an executive whose figures do not add up, although she will protect an employee who brings her unwelcome truth. Directors have tried three times to vote her off the board. Each time the shareholders have returned her, because something valuable usually remains after she is finished.
