Quality-Inspector Hiroshi Tanaka
Tanaka’s inspection lens is held in place by a narrow band across his silver hair. He wears it because he still prefers to see a flaw for himself, even when a full report has already arrived on his desk.
He became unpopular with several shipyards by rejecting vessels that met their delivery schedules but failed their specifications. Eventually someone gave him command of one of the rejected hulls, expecting the assignment to silence him. Tanaka named it Tolerances and documented every fault as his crew made it fit for service.
He has no objection to a repair made openly. His objection is to a defect passed on as somebody else’s problem. Visitors are welcome aboard if they can tolerate a captain who notices a loose fastening in the middle of a conversation. Enemies discover the same attention directed at their own ships, where assurances are worth less than the condition of the work.
