Commander Voss

The scar above Voss’s eye came from a bridge window that should have held. She kept the shattered frame on her desk until the manufacturer admitted its inspection records were false. The corrected design went into production; the manufacturer did not receive another contract.

Voss earned her authority by boarding the ships she commissioned and taking them into the conditions their builders had promised they could survive. Crews learned that her flat, severe expression concealed a practical courtesy: she would never ask them to trust a vessel she had refused to trust herself.

The Iron Hammer bears that philosophy in welded steel. Its passages are plain, its fittings standardized, and its maintenance crews have the authority to stop a departure. Voss knows an empire is built from things that keep working after speeches end. She also knows exactly how much force it takes to prove that somebody else’s promises were hollow.
