The Threshold
The Threshold’s master held an office charged with receiving the dead and deciding which petitions might pass onward. Its key now hangs from her own chain, heavy enough to rest against the violet stone at her chest.
The office expected the doorway to be closed after the master’s departure. Instead, people kept arriving: bereaved families with unanswered claims, witnesses carrying names, and strangers whose dead had nowhere else to go. The Threshold could not persuade herself to turn them away merely because the appointment had ended.
Doorway now carries the work beyond the old office. She listens to each petitioner and records what she can verify, though she makes no promise that every plea will be granted. Her superiors consider the prolonged service untidy. The people who find her understand why she keeps the key: an open door is a responsibility as well as an invitation.
