Shroud-bearer Vespera Morant
Three masks accompany Vespera Morant: one above her brow, one at her shoulder, and one kept close enough that she can reach it without looking. Each belonged to a teacher who shaped her understanding of the dead. Their lessons did not always agree.
One taught her to preserve a rite exactly. Another taught her to change it when the living needed something different. The third warned that both certainty and flexibility could become excuses for vanity. Vespera carries the masks because she still argues with all three.
Pale Procession travels among communities with conflicting customs. Vespera listens before choosing how to serve them, and she refuses to answer to her teachers’ names even when a patron would find that comforting. Their authority helped make her; it did not erase her own judgment. A visitor who asks about a mask may receive a story, provided they are prepared for its complications.
