The Umbral Widow
The Widow’s face is half concealed by a battered mask, though the unmasked half reveals no more of her intentions. Once, people addressed her by a name belonging to a household and a history. She let both fall away when she discovered how readily the living use a name to claim a person.
Aboard Last Vigil, she receives petitioners without titles and hears them without promising kindness. The Dominion’s great houses have learned that anonymity leaves her unusually difficult to bind: an old oath cannot easily be called in when its maker cannot be proven.
Her ship’s bone framework carries scavenged plates at awkward angles, each taken from a vessel whose strength outlasted its owner. The Widow considers such remnants honest. They show what was taken and what remains. She offers the same clarity to rivals: surrender what they cannot keep, or join the wreckage that sustains her vigil.
