Pressure is merely enthusiasm, contained.

Marshal Bexley of the Brass Bastion

Bexley keeps a pair of drumsticks crossed on his chest and an old hearing horn close at hand. The beat he favors once gave factory crews time to take shelter before a dangerous test. He carried it into service because a warning is only useful when people recognize it and believe they have time to act.

Brass Bastion announces itself with that rhythm before its mortars speak. Some rivals have called the practice sentimental; Bexley calls it a chance for a civilian vessel to clear the area. He has no interest in winning an argument with someone who fires through the warning.

His white whiskers and red uniform make him easy to pick out at a gathering, where he enjoys a good band and a properly told story. He is less forgiving of commanders who treat bystanders as acceptable losses. The marshal gives a warning because he intends it to be heard.
