Engineer-Regent Octavia Dunwarden
Octavia Dunwarden took the regency when the heir was too young to govern. She stabilized the house’s foundries, settled debts, and made herself indispensable to people who had expected a temporary caretaker.
The heir came of age, but Octavia remained. She argues that the transition would endanger agreements she alone understands; the heir argues that no one can learn to govern while being denied the authority to try. Both claims contain enough truth to keep the house divided.
Refusal carries the regent’s answer to everyone who has asked her to step down. Its brass fittings are maintained with the same precision Octavia brings to her correspondence, and its crew knows she can be generous to those who work diligently. Beneath her composed expression lies a fear she rarely admits: if she steps aside, she may discover whether the house needed her as much as she needed the house.
